Shri Agastyar Ashram in Chennai was established in connection with the revered Shri Agastyar Temple,
a spiritual sanctuary known for its unique features and deep historical significance. One of the most distinctive aspects of the temple is the dedicated sannidhi (sanctum) for Sage Agastyar and his consort, Lopamudra—a rarity that sets this temple apart.
The temple complex is adorned with intricate sculptures and houses a remarkable collection of ancient Nadi manuscripts. These sacred texts, attributed to Sage Agastyar, contain profound insights into medicine, astrology, and temple architecture. They offer a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual and intellectual legacy of the sage.
Originally, the temple included sannidhis for Maharishi Agastyar, Lord Murugan, Lord Vinayagar, and the Navagrahas. Over time, the temple underwent several phases of development and expansion, evolving into the form it takes today.
With a history believed to span over 75 years, the site was once the residence of a renowned Nadi reader who safeguarded a significant number of manuscripts written by Sage Agastyar. For many years, these manuscripts were kept in a modest room that also housed the utsava murtis (festival deities). Even today, during Saraswati Pooja, these sacred Nadis are ceremoniously brought out and honored with special rituals.
The temple continues to be a place of spiritual and scholarly reverence, attracting devotees and seekers interested in the ancient wisdom embedded in its stones and scriptures.
